MoT’s make access to important information about problems cars

It may not seem surprising that millions of cars fail their annual MoT as there are an estimated 34 million on the roads of Britain today. However, a recent report has shown that some cars are more susceptible than others to problems.
An online research firm has analysed the documentation of more than 24 million MoT records and found some interesting results. One worrying statistic revealed was that over a particular period between 2010 and 2011 one in five cars failed their first MoT. Lighting and signalling problems were among the most common reasons for failure along with tyres and issues with visibility.

The reports also showed that some manufacturers were more likely to fail than others; with European companies being the worst at first time MoT failures. However, if you are looking for a more reliable car then buy Japanese as they came in at the top three places for passing the first MoT.

This report is the first time that any such information about MoT statistics has been allowed to be made public and VOSA tried to stop the report from being published. However, the Government’s OpenData scheme has meant that driver’s have access to important information about vehicle manufacturers.

That said, the vast majority for failures were due to owner error and could easily have been avoided with a small amount of basic car maintenance.
